IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test for Canadian immigration. But understanding how your IELTS scores convert to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) — and how CLB levels affect your CRS score — is essential for planning your Express Entry strategy.
IELTS General vs Academic: Which Do You Need?
For immigration purposes, you need IELTS General Training (not Academic). IELTS Academic is for university admissions and will not be accepted for Express Entry or most PNP streams.
IELTS to CLB Conversion Table
| CLB Level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | |-----------|-----------|---------|---------|----------| | CLB 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 | | CLB 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 | | CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | | CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | | CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | | CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | | CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |
Important: Each IELTS band maps to a CLB level independently. Your CLB is determined band by band — not from your overall IELTS band score.
Minimum Scores by Program
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
Minimum CLB 7 in all four components to be eligible. That means:
- Listening: 6.0
- Reading: 6.0
- Writing: 6.0
- Speaking: 6.0
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For NOC TEER 0 or 1 occupations: CLB 7 minimum
For NOC TEER 2 or 3 occupations: CLB 5 minimum
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing
How IELTS Affects Your CRS Score
This is where strategy matters most. Your CLB level translates to CRS points in two areas:
First Official Language (Max 136 points single / 128 points with spouse)
| CLB Level | Reading | Writing | Listening | Speaking | |-----------|---------|---------|-----------|----------| | CLB 7 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | | CLB 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 | | CLB 9 | 16 | 16 | 16 | 16 | | CLB 10+ | 20 | 20 | 20 | 20 |
Going from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in all four bands adds 32 CRS points for single applicants. That's a significant jump that can be the difference between being invited in a draw and waiting months longer.
Skill Transferability Bonus (up to 50 extra points)
Strong language scores combined with education or work experience unlock extra points:
- CLB 9+ with post-secondary education: +25 points
- CLB 7–8 with post-secondary education: +13 points
- CLB 9+ with 3+ years work experience: +25 points
- CLB 7–8 with 3+ years work experience: +13 points
Targeting CLB 9: The Sweet Spot
CLB 9 requires:
- Listening: 8.0 (from 7.5 at CLB 8 — just half a band!)
- Reading: 7.0 (from 6.5)
- Writing: 7.0 (from 6.5)
- Speaking: 7.0 (from 6.5)
The CRS reward for hitting CLB 9 across all components is dramatically higher than CLB 8. If you're at CLB 8 in any component, seriously consider retaking IELTS specifically to target CLB 9.
Study Tips to Improve Your Score
Listening (target 8.0 for CLB 9)
- Listen to BBC podcasts, CBC radio, and TED talks daily
- Practice on official IELTS listening tests under timed conditions
- Focus on Section 4 (academic lecture) — the hardest section
Reading (target 7.0)
- Read The Economist, The Guardian, and BBC News regularly
- Practice skimming and scanning — you won't have time to read everything
- Learn to identify paraphrase — IELTS questions often use synonyms of the passage text
Writing (target 7.0)
- Task 1: Practise describing graphs, charts, and processes — these are mechanical and learnable
- Task 2: Learn the essay structures (argument essay, discussion essay, problem-solution essay)
- Vocabulary range and grammatical accuracy are the two biggest scoring factors
Speaking (target 7.0)
- Practise speaking English every day — with tutors, language exchange partners, or recorded self-practice
- Focus on coherence and fluency rather than perfect grammar
- Extend your Part 2 responses to the full 2 minutes
How Many Times Can You Retake?
There is no limit on how many times you can retake IELTS. You can keep your best score from your most recent valid attempt. IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for immigration purposes.
IELTS vs CELPIP
IRCC also accepts CELPIP-General as an alternative to IELTS. CELPIP is a Canadian-developed test that some applicants find more straightforward because it's computer-based and uses Canadian accents and contexts throughout. Both tests cost roughly $300 CAD.
Booking Your Test
IELTS tests are offered year-round. Book at least 4–8 weeks in advance, especially for test dates around popular immigration intake periods. IELTS is available at British Council and IDP centres globally.
