Australia points test: frequently asked questions

How many points do I need for Australian skilled migration?

The minimum to submit an Expression of Interest is 65 points, but invitations are competitive — subclass 189 invitations typically go to candidates with 85–95+ points. Subclass 190 adds 5 points for state nomination and 491 adds 15 for regional nomination, which is why most successful applicants now use those routes.

How are Australia immigration points calculated?

Points come from age (max 30 at ages 25–32), English ability (up to 20 for Superior English), skilled employment inside and outside Australia (up to 20), education (up to 20 for a doctorate), plus bonuses for Australian study, specialist STEM qualifications, partner skills, community language (NAATI), and state or regional nomination.

What is the fastest way to increase my points?

Improving English from Proficient to Superior (IELTS 8.0 in each band) adds 10 points instantly. State nomination (+5) or regional nomination (+15) are the biggest structural levers. A positive skills assessment is mandatory anyway, so complete it early.

Is this the official Home Affairs points calculator?

No — this is a free estimator based on the published Department of Home Affairs points table. Your official score is assessed when you lodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect. Use this to plan before paying for tests and assessments.
