Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

The Subclass 186 is Australia's primary permanent employer-sponsored visa. Unlike the points-based pathway, it requires an Australian employer to both apply for standard business sponsorship and formally nominate you for a specific position.

Two Streams

Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream For Subclass 482 (TSS) visa holders who have worked for their sponsor for at least 2 years in the nominated occupation. As of July 2023, the requirement was reduced from 3 years to 2 years.

Requirements: - Employer must have nominated you as a standard business sponsor - 2+ years full-time (or equivalent) work in the nominated occupation with the same employer - Occupation must be on the MLTSSL - Salary at or above the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)

Direct Entry (DE) Stream For applicants who do not hold or have not held a TSS or previous employer-sponsored visa, or whose employer cannot use the TRT stream.

Requirements: - Positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian authority - At least 3 years of relevant work experience - Occupation on the MLTSSL - Employer must demonstrate they could not find a suitable Australian to fill the role

Age Requirement

Must be under 45 at time of application (some exemptions apply for academics, scientists and recognised as meeting specific criteria).

Permanent Residence from Day One

Unlike the 482, the Subclass 186 grants permanent residence immediately. No further PR application is needed.
