Student Visa (Subclass 500)

The Subclass 500 Student visa replaced the previous student visa framework (Subclasses 570–576) in 2016. It provides a single streamlined student visa for all international students enrolled in full-time study at a CRICOS-registered Australian education provider.

Who Can Apply?

Any international student who has received a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider for: - School sector (primary, secondary) - English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) - Vocational Education and Training (VET / TAFE) - Higher Education (undergraduate, postgraduate) - Postgraduate research degrees

Key Requirements

• Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) — must demonstrate genuine intention to stay temporarily and return home after study
• English Language — minimum IELTS 5.5 overall (or equivalent) for most courses; specific providers may require higher
• Financial Capacity — must show ability to pay tuition fees and living expenses (approximately AUD 24,505 per year for living costs, per DOHHA guidelines)
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — must hold OSHC for the duration of the visa

Work Rights

• During study: 48 hours per fortnight
• During semester breaks: unlimited hours (since 2023 policy change)
• Your spouse/partner may also be eligible for work rights

Post-Study Work Options

After completing a degree at an Australian institution, graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), which allows 2–6 years of work in Australia depending on the level and field of study.
