Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

The Subclass 482 (TSS) visa replaced the former 457 visa in March 2018. It is Australia's main temporary employer-sponsored work visa, allowing businesses to fill skills gaps with overseas workers when Australians are not available.

Two Main Streams

Short-term Stream - For occupations on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) - Visa granted for up to 2 years (or 3 years under an international trade obligation) - Renewable once onshore; subsequent renewals must be made from overseas - No direct pathway to permanent residence via the 482 for this stream

Medium-term Stream - For occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) - Visa granted for up to 4 years - After 2 years of work with the sponsor, may be eligible for the Subclass 186 (ENS) Temporary Residence Transition stream — a pathway to permanent residence

Employer Sponsorship Requirements

The employer must be an approved standard business sponsor. They must: - Demonstrate the position is genuinely needed - Conduct Labour Market Testing (LMT) to show they could not find a suitable Australian - Pay the applicant at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT — AUD 73,150 in 2023-24) or the market salary rate, whichever is higher

English Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate at least competent English (IELTS 5.0 in each band, or equivalent) unless exempt.

Skills Requirement

Applicants must have the skills, qualifications and experience required for the nominated occupation, evidenced through relevant qualifications and work experience.
