UK Family Visa

The UK Family visa allows eligible family members of British citizens or persons settled in the UK (those with Indefinite Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Enter) to come to, or remain in, the UK.

Who Can Apply

• Spouse or civil partner of a British citizen or settled person
• Unmarried partner (must have been in a genuine relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years)
• Fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner (6-month visa to get married then switch to family visa)
• Child under 18 joining or staying with a parent
• Adult dependent relative in exceptional circumstances

Financial Requirement

The UK spouse visa financial requirement was significantly increased in 2024. The sponsoring partner must earn at least £29,000 per year (increased from £18,600). This threshold is being phased up further: £34,500 from early 2025 and £38,700 by the end of the rollout period.

Income can include: salary, self-employment income, rental income, savings (above £16,000 threshold acts as a top-up), and pension income.

English Language Requirement

The applicant must demonstrate English at CEFR A1 level at the time of initial entry (for spouse/partner visas). When applying to extend or apply for settlement, the threshold rises to CEFR A2, then B1 for ILR.

Settlement Route

Family visa holders (spouses/partners) can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years of continuous residence in the UK on the family visa. The route requires passing the Life in the UK test and demonstrating English at B1.

Biometric Residence Permit

Applicants from outside the UK receive a BRP upon arrival. The BRP must be collected within 10 days from a designated Post Office.
