The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a UK immigration route designed to attract talented graduates from the world's top universities. It offers an open work permission with no requirement for a job offer or UK sponsor, making it one of the most flexible work routes available.
Who Qualifies
Applicants must have been awarded a degree (bachelor's, master's, or PhD) from an institution that appears on the UKVI's HPI approved list β a list compiled annually using the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Only institutions in the global top 50 in either ranking qualify.
The degree must have been awarded within the 5 years preceding the date of application.
Visa Duration
Work Rights
HPI visa holders can work for any employer, in any sector, including self-employment. They can also bring dependants (spouse/partner and children) who also receive open work rights.
No Settlement Route
The HPI visa does not lead directly to ILR. It is intended as a gateway visa β most holders transition to the Skilled Worker visa (or another route leading to ILR) during the HPI visa period.
Key Difference from Graduate Visa
Unlike the Graduate visa (which requires completing a UK degree), the HPI visa is for those who graduated from top-ranked overseas universities and have not studied in the UK. Both visas offer similar open work rights but for different profiles.
Eligible Universities
UKVI publishes an updated global ranking list annually. Applicants must verify their institution appears on the most current list at the time of application.
