The Innovator Founder visa is the UK's primary route for experienced entrepreneurs who want to set up and run an innovative business in the UK. It replaced the older Innovator and Start-Up visas in April 2023.
Core Requirements
The business idea must meet three criteria judged by an approved endorsing body: 1. Innovative β A new and original business idea, not simply a copy of an existing model 2. Viable β Has the potential to generate revenue and succeed in the UK market 3. Scalable β Has the potential to grow and create jobs in the UK
No Minimum Investment Requirement
Unlike many entrepreneur visas worldwide, the Innovator Founder visa has no minimum investment threshold. The endorsing body's assessment of the business idea is the key gatekeeping mechanism.
Endorsing Bodies
UKVI maintains a list of approved endorsing bodies β typically established accelerators, investors, and business support organizations. Applicants must apply directly to an endorsing body with their business plan and supporting evidence before applying for the visa.
Team Applications
Multiple co-founders can apply under the same business idea, provided each has been individually endorsed. There is no explicit cap on co-founder numbers, but each must demonstrate their active role in the business.
Settlement Route
After 3 years on the Innovator Founder visa, applicants may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if they meet specific business progress milestones assessed by the endorsing body. Milestones include: at least Β£50,000 investment secured, 5 new jobs created for settled workers, annual turnover of Β£500,000 or more (only one milestone needs to be met).
English Language and Maintenance
Must demonstrate English at CEFR B2 level. Must also show Β£945 in savings held for 90 days (maintenance requirement), unless exempt.
