The UK Student visa (which replaced the Tier 4 Student visa in 2021) allows international students aged 16 and over to study a full-time course at a UKVI-licensed educational institution in the United Kingdom.
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Before applying, students must receive a CAS from their institution. The CAS is a unique reference number that contains details of the course, fees, and institution. It is central to the visa application and is issued by the institution's enrolment or admissions team.
English Language Requirement
All Student visa applicants must demonstrate their English language ability. For university courses, this usually means an IELTS for UKVI Academic score (or an equivalent SELT from an approved provider). The minimum score varies by course level but is typically IELTS 5.5β6.5 overall.
Working While Studying
Student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time (full-time during official vacation periods). This restriction does not apply to students in government-sponsored positions.
Maintenance Requirement
Students must show they can support themselves financially. For courses at London universities, the requirement is Β£1,334 per month for up to 9 months; outside London it is Β£1,023 per month (2024 figures). Funds must be held in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.
Pathway to Other Visas
The Student visa is a gateway to the UK's post-study routes. On completion of a qualifying degree, students can switch to the Graduate visa (2 or 3 years open work) and subsequently to the Skilled Worker or other skilled routes, creating a clear pathway to long-term UK residence.
