The O-1 is a temporary (nonimmigrant) work visa for individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ability in their field. It is often described as the "nonimmigrant equivalent" of the EB-1A green card — but it is faster, shorter-term, and may be renewed indefinitely.
O-1A: For individuals with extraordinary ability in sciences, education, business, or athletics. Evaluated using criteria similar to EB-1A (awards, publications, salary, critical role, etc.)
O-1B: For individuals with extraordinary achievement in the arts, or in the motion picture or television industry. For arts: must have distinction (high level of achievement evidenced by degree of skill significantly above ordinary). For film/TV: must have demonstrated extraordinary achievement evidenced by a high level of skill and recognition.
O-2 visas can be issued to essential support personnel accompanying O-1 holders in athletics or entertainment. The support personnel must have critical skills not easily obtained from US workers.
Standard processing: 3–4 months. Premium processing (I-907): 15 business days, additional $2,805 fee. Most O-1 petitions are filed with premium processing given the urgent nature of many creative/athletic engagements.
