Identify the correct preference category (F1–F4) based on the relationship and petitioner status. US citizen or LPR petitioner files I-130 with USCIS to establish the priority date.
Form: I-130
After I-130 approval, your priority date is established. Monitor the monthly State Department Visa Bulletin. Waiting periods range from a few years to several decades depending on category and country.
When priority date becomes current, the National Visa Center (NVC) notifies the petitioner. NVC collects fees, documents, and ultimately schedules an immigrant visa interview at the appropriate US embassy.
Complete a medical examination by a panel physician. Attend the immigrant visa interview at the US Embassy or consulate. Present all required documents.
Upon interview approval, receive immigrant visa. Enter the US before the visa expiry date. Your green card will be mailed within weeks of entry.
